Bolt giving up spikes for cleats?

7:25 am in Caribbean, Celebrity, Sports by C. Sharpe

Usain BoltThe “Jamaican Machine”, Usain “Lightning” Bolt now has a book out titled “Usain Bolt: 9.58″ in which he reveals serious plans to play for Manchester United Football Club (FC) in England.  He calls Man U, his “favorite team”. Bolt also loves playing cricket and has made that quite clear.

So does bolt plan to ditch his spikes for cleats? He is very serious in his love, perhaps the very reason he expects to retire from track in a few years.

Another option:  He could become the Worlds first 3-sport international star: running track, playing soccer for Manchester United, and playing cricket for the West Indies.  That’s an idea.

The reality

If Bolt is signed by Manchester United (or any other professional soccer team for that matter), it’s a public relations move only as we don’t expect Bolt to play any serious soccer at that level overnight.

What say you, Caribbean people?

Bolt human, loses to Gay on Independence Day

8:02 pm in Caribbean, Celebrity, Sports by C. Sharpe

In a “shock around the world”, seemingly unbeatable, Jamaican double-world record holder Usain Bolt, was beaten in the Diamond League 100M race in Sweden by Tyson Gay who ran 9.83 to Bolt’s “human-like” 9.97.

Bolt was gracious in defeat and, perhaps, will wake up now.

Is this the real reason for the SuperHeat?

1:25 am in Celebrity, Sports by YOWLink Admin

We all know that Wade, Bosh, and James have teamed up to form, what  C. Sharpe calls, “The SuperHeat“.  Rumors are that the beautiful actress, Gabrielle Union, is behind the breakup of Wade’s marriage and is his current “main squeeze”.   I don’t have substantiated evidence for either, though she has been seen hanging around him.  I certainly don’t like to see any marriage broken, but it’s very common these days.  Anyway…

Actress Gabrielle Union

Could this be a reason for those 3 super-stars teaming up in Miami, instead of in Chicago, or Cleveland or New York?  I mean, those Chicago, Toronto, Cleveland, and New York players hang out with nice looking girls, don’t they?

Do you think Bosh and James came to Miami because of the possibility Gabrielle could hook them up with friends that look like her or, impossible as it may seem, better?

Would you leave Toronto where you could make a killing if you re-sign or do a sign-and-trade, take less money, to hang out with a guy who hangs out with a girl like Gabrielle?

Would you leave Cleveland where you were king for Miami, if you could hang out with a guy who hangs out with girls like this?

C.Sharpe said, and I agree, “if her inner beauty matches her outer beauty, she might be the most beautiful woman in Hollywood.” I don’t believe she has done any plastic surgery as of yet and that’s a definite plus.

Stimulating, isn’t it….  and I’m referring to the topic, not the girl.   But C. Sharpe also said, “it’s more about friendship and winning for these three and less about the ladies.”   Not sure if I agree 100%, my bredren.

Pick Your All-Time W.I. Cricket Team

7:35 pm in Caribbean, Celebrity, Sports by C. Sharpe

The cricket site crickinfo.com is famous for picking all time teams by country / region.  Recently they picked an all-time West Indies XI from an allotted 6.  With the state of our current regional cricket and board, this is exciting.  It gives us something to smile about, because some of us are students of the game and watch tapes/DVDs, listen to audio of past great West Indians… and there were many of them.

The Cricinfo Team

  • Openers: Gordon Greenidge, Conrad Hunte
  • Middle Order: George Headley, Vivian Richards, Brian Lara
  • All-Rounder: Garry Sobers
  • WicketKeeper: Jackie Hendriks
  • Fast Bowlers: Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, Curtly Ambrose
  • Spinner: Lance Gibbs

The Yowlink  Admin Team

  • Openers: Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes (best opening pair of all time in all of cricket)
  • Middle Order: George Headley, Vivian Richards, Brian Lara
  • All-Rounder: Garry Sobers
  • WicketKeeper: Jeffrey Dujon
  • Fast Bowlers: Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, Joel Garner
  • Spinner: Lance Gibbs
We picked 7 members from the West Indies teams of the mid-70s – late 80s that were virtually unbeatable.  No surprise how we voted.  Bias?  What bias?  We are almost as bad now as we were good back then… but I digress.
Were it a West Indies XIV (14), we would have voted the following people on (who are also products of those 70s – 80s teams:
(12)  Andy Roberts
(13)  Curtley Ambrose
(14)  Courtney Walsh
You notice that we picked 3 fast bowlers to make up 12, 13, and 14?  No surprise since the West Indies have boasted 6 of the best  12 fast bowlers of all time in our opinion but, once again, I digress.

Select Your Team

The deal is, you are allowed  allowed to pick as follows:

Select The Nominees
2 Openers Conrad Hunte Gordon Greenidge Desmond Haynes Chris Gayle

3 Middle Order George Headley Clyde Walcott Frank Worrell Rohan Kanhai Seymour Nurse Clive Lloyd
Lawrence Rowe Alvin Kallicharran Viv Richards Richie Richardson Brian Lara Shivnarine Chanderpaul

1 All Rounder Learie Constantine Gerry Gomez Collie Smith

1 WicketKeeper Clyde Walcott Deryck Murray Jeffrey Dujon

3 Fast Bowlers Wes Hall Andy Roberts Michael Holding Colin Croft Joel Garner Malcolm Marshall
Courtney Walsh Curtly Ambrose Ian Bishop

1 Spinner Alf Valentine Lance Gibbs

One Exception

We allow you to put in anyone not listed above to replace ONE person on the list above.  In other words, your final 11 can only contain 1 person not listed here.

The Superfriends W.B.J. on the Super Heat!

9:32 pm in Celebrity, Sports by C. Sharpe

All right Miami!!!  It is official.  The final piece of the puzzle, the icing on the cake, the cherry on the sundae has been made.  Your basketball team is officially the Super HEAT of South Beach, Miami… at least on paper.  That is because the 3 top picks of the 1993 draft will sign with the Miami Heat.

Lebron James made it official at about 9:25 PM on Thursday July 8, after Bosh and Wade had committed a day earlier.

W: Dwyane Wade

Wade, nicknamed Flash or otherwise known as D-Wade, agreed to re-sign with the Heat… terms estimated at 6 years $125 million US dollars.  The 28 year old Wade was the #5 pick of the 1993 draft and has carried the Heat to a championship in 2006, when he was 24 years old.

B: Chris Bosh

Bosh, nicknamed CB4, agreed he cannot win a championship by himself and agreed to come to Miami, estimated at 5 years $96 million.  The #4 pick of the 2003 draft, Bosh ended up in Toronto with the Raptors and didn’t taste as much success as his other two brethren but decided to roll with his boys into South Beach to enjoy the wild ride.

J: Lebron James

And now, a few minutes ago, Lebron James has agreed to come to “South Beach and join Bosh and Wade.”

Everyone knows King James or LBJ.  He was the #1 pick of the 2003 draft straight out of high school.  The man was more matured than the typical 18 year old.  Over the years, he’s had lots of individual success and accolades but fewer team successes than he would like… like an NBA championship or 2 or … 6, for example.  Only time will tell if his last-minute 1-hour announcment (obviously orchestrated by ESPN) on Thursday will manifest itself into the type of success he is looking for.  As the 25 year old James said, “I just want to win.”

Conclusions?

This is the making of a 3-man super team, just better than the Celtics when they signed Garnett, Pierce, and Allen together.

So, after this, thr Heat should have 4 men under contract (the fourth being Chalmers) because Beasley is probably included in a trade to Toronto for Bosh.  They still have to sign their 3 draft picks bringing it up to 7 players.  So they will still need at least another 5 players for minimum to just above-minimum contracts. Anyone of you Yawdies with any game who are willing to go to Heat camp and play for a small $250K or so?

Let’s see how this plays out and if it translates into sold-out arena, playoffs, and championships in Miami.

Will this combo work?

5:25 pm in Caribbean, Celebrity, News by Peta-Gaye French

Also known to many in Jamaica as “Presi”, “President”, “Shortman”, Coke was taken into custody in a traffic stop on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 by the Jamaican police after over a month on the run.

We have seen many recent photos of Dudus and are already hearing from people how “him look different yuh see”.   We will not speculate but would love to heard your feedback.

As always, talk to us nuh.

Christopher “Dudus” Coke Caught…

6:47 pm in Caribbean, Celebrity, News by Peta-Gaye French

Yowlink understands that early [this] evening, June 22, 2010, fugitive Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke has been caught and is is now in police custody in Jamaica.  Reports are that he was held in a routine traffic stop on the Mandela Highway in St. Catherine.

On the run since May 18, when Prime Minister Bruce Golding signed the extradition request from the US, Coke was with a Reverend Al Miller who claimed he was transporting Coke to the US Embassy in Kingston.  Coke is wanted by the US government on drug and gun trafficking charges.

Reports are that people have started to gather near the police station where he is held.  However, the station is heavily guarded by police and soldiers.

We imagine there will not be any takers on the US $20,000 reward now.

In a recent Yowlink poll, we asked “Where is Dudus?”    The results were:

  • moving around Kingston (50%)
  • Bruce Golding’s house (17%)
  • South America (17%)
  • taken out in a coffin – alive & well (8%)
  • killed and taken out in coffin (4%)
  • US custody (4%,)

Interestingly you guys got it right.  He was actually on Mandela Highway at the border of St. Catherine and St. Andrew.

Talk to us nuh.  What next in this saga?

Tiger misses cut in Quail Hollow Championship

10:00 am in Celebrity, Sports by C. Sharpe

For the sixth time in his career, Tiger Woods missed the cut on Friday April 30, 2010.  This was the Quail Hollow Championship, not a major, but still…

Well, he’s human.  It could be that he’s overthinking things.  The golf experts described his play using words and sentences like:

  • “ugly” doesn’t do it justice the way he played.
  • indifference (on Tiger’s part)
  • On Friday, he shot a 79 and missed the cut by a mile.

Well, it may be strategic.  With the US Open is coming up in mid-June he, perhaps, wanted just a nice warm up.  After all, he did very well with in the Masters’   ( See http://yowlink.com/2010/04/10/wrestling-with-tiger/). Read the rest of this entry →

Wrestling with Tiger

8:07 am in Celebrity, Games, Sports by C. Sharpe

Anyone who have watched “professional wrestling” entertainment in the eighties and nineties might remember “Nature Boy” Rick Flair.  Flashy character… er… individual.  His favorite saying was “Whether you like it… or you don’t… learn to love it… because it’s the best thing going today.  Wooooo!!!” He was entertaining for real.

Well, Tiger is out of the woods and back into the public eye.  He did a true press conference where he was “holding back the tears” and at times where he cried.  Then his main supporter, Nike, created a very clever, but some call creepy, black-and-white ad with a solemn Tiger staring at the camera and the voice Read the rest of this entry →
