West Indies men follow women to win World T20

The Darren Sammy-led West Indies men defeated England by 4 wickets with 2 balls to spare to lift the World T20 championship from to become the first men’s team to win the title twice.

Batting first, England made 155-7 which most people expected to be a relatively easy ask for the West Indies.  However, unlike the WI women openers, Gayle and Charles fell cheaply and England stifled the WI batting. Later Marlon Samuels who was adjudged caught out was referred by the umpire and the 3rd umpire saw that the ball hit the grass.  Marlon was back in.

Sensible batting from Marlon brought the West Indies to respectability but still a big ask.

After 16 overs, WI were 111-6, losing both Russell & Capt Sammy in that over. WI needed 45 from 24.

After 17 overs, WI were 118-6 from 17 overs with Braithwaite joining Samuels. WI needed 38 from 18. Big but not impossible ask. Willey to bowl.

After 18 overs, WI were 129-6, now needing 27 from 12. Huge but not impossible ask at 13.5 per over.

But, Jordan bowled a beautiful 19th over to restrict the WI to 137-6. Marlon Samuels tried to keep strike on last ball but couldn’t.  It was a blessing in disguise.

With the big Stokes to bowl the 20th over, England was bursting with confidence. Sammy and his fellow West Indians were nervous.

But, big Carlos Braithwaite was today’s hero. It was SIX, SiX, SIX, and SIX to bring the West Indies home, 161-6, winning by 4 wickets with 2 balls to spare. Samuels had 85 from 66 while Braithwaite had 34 from 10.

Congratulations to the West Indian Men on a great feat.
