Caribbean Premier League off to good start

CPL T20 Logo.jpgInaugural Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 bowled off on Tuesday with Barbados Tridents defeating St. Lucia Zouks… and culminating with the finals on August 24.

The Format

The CPL T20 has 6 teams who will play 7 matches (each team will play each other at least once, and at most twice).  The matches are televised internationally, including in the United States, via ESPN3.  You can always follow commentary on http://cricinfo.com (owned by ESPN). The teams are:

  1. Guyana Amazon Warriors – captained by Guyana’s Ramnaresh Sarwan, with Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez being the international franchise player & T&T’s Sunil Narine being the local franchise player.  However, they also boast the likes of the left arm accurate medium pacer, from Jamaica, Krishmar Santokie.who has bowled very well in Guyana’s two wins thus far. Guyana is coached by Roger Harper.
  2. Barbados Tridents – controversially captained by T&T’s Kieron Pollard (local international franchise player) who have gained fan respect by winning first 2 matches. The international franchise player is Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik. Desmond Haynes is the coach of Barbadian franchise.
  3. Antigua Hawkbills – Captain and local franchise player, Marlon Samuels, leads Antigua.  38 year old Australian, Ricky Ponting, is the international franchise player. Antiguan and former West Indian great, Sir Viv “the master blaster” Richards, is the team’s coach.
  4. St Lucia Zouks – captained by West Indian captain and St Lucian, Darren Sammy. Antiguan Andy Roberts is the coach of the St Lucian franchise.
  5. Trinidad & Tobago Red Steels – The captain and local franchise player of T&T is West Indian ODI captain, Dwayne Bravo.  Ross Taylor of New Zealand is the international franchise player, and franchise is coached by Barbadian great, Gordon Greenidge.
  6. Jamaica Tallawahs – captained by local franchise player, Jamaica’s Chris Gayle, while the international franchise player is 41 year old Sri Lankan, legend Muttiah Muralitheran.
