Fraser-Price strikes gold first for Jamaica

In the women’s 100M track and field sprint finals today, it was Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price winning Jamaica’s first gold of the 2012 Olympic Games.

1 FRASER-PRYCE Shelly-Ann 10.75
2 JETER Carmelita 10.78
3 CAMPBELL-BROWN Veronica 10.81

In the same race, Jamaica’s other sprint queen Veronica Campbell-Brown ran a season best 10.81 to finish 3rd, picking up bronze behind Carmelita Jeter of the USA who finished 2nd in a season best of 10.78. Kelly-Ann Baptiste of Trinidad and Tobago finished 6th in 10.94.

What can we say about Fraser-Price? The young lady comes through when it counts… big.

Tomorrow, we will see what the men do. Some people predict 1-2-3 Jamaica. My prediction is that there will be 4-6 Caribbean athletes in the men’s 100M final tomorrow. If I am right, and 3 are Jamaicans, the expectations will be extremely high. The Americans (USA) and other Caribbean athletes may have an uphill battle but should not be ruled out.
