T&T passes banner to Guyana, new T20 regional champs
July 31, 2010

Join us in congratulating the Guyanese team.  Against all odds, they are the new regional Twenty-20 champions and get to compete in that T-20 tournament where a lot of money are up for grabs, particularly to the top 3 finishers.  You may recall that T&T, defending regional champions, finished second and their players were “paid”.

Heroics by who?  Heroics by Jonathan Foo.  Foo is perhaps the man of the tournament with his unbeaten knocks.  This time, he was 42 unbeaten.  With 3 balls left, Guyana needed 3 to win with Searles bowling for Barbados.  Foo took a single, a decision questioned and perhaps criticized by the commentators.  But it turned out to be a good decision because, on the penultimate delivery, tailender Devendra Bishoo hit the 2 runs required to cement the win.

Congratulations to the NEW regional champs, Guyana, overcoming powerhouses like T&T and Barbados.  In the 3rd-place match, T&T proved that their original win over Jamaica was no fluke and brushed them aside easily in a rain-shortened match.  T&T won by 10 wickets.

So, it’s Guyana, Barbados, T&T… first, second, third respectively.  There is no consolation prize.  It’s winner takes all… the trip to the tournament where Guyana will compete against some very strong T-20 world sides.  Let’s cheer on our Guyanese friends.

Oh, and don’t be surprised to see the next West Indies T20 side include Jonathan Foo (GUY), Darren Bravo (T&T), and Krishmar Santokie (JAM).  They did well this tournament.

Pick Your All-Time W.I. Cricket Team

The cricket site is famous for picking all time teams by country / region.  Recently they picked an all-time West Indies XI from an allotted 6.  With the state of our current regional cricket and board, this is exciting.  It gives us something to smile about, because some of us are students of the game and watch tapes/DVDs, listen to audio of past great West Indians… and there were many of them.

The Cricinfo Team

  • Openers: Gordon Greenidge, Conrad Hunte
  • Middle Order: George Headley, Vivian Richards, Brian Lara
  • All-Rounder: Garry Sobers
  • WicketKeeper: Jackie Hendriks
  • Fast Bowlers: Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, Curtly Ambrose
  • Spinner: Lance Gibbs

The Yowlink  Admin Team

  • Openers: Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes (best opening pair of all time in all of cricket)
  • Middle Order: George Headley, Vivian Richards, Brian Lara
  • All-Rounder: Garry Sobers
  • WicketKeeper: Jeffrey Dujon
  • Fast Bowlers: Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, Joel Garner
  • Spinner: Lance Gibbs
We picked 7 members from the West Indies teams of the mid-70s – late 80s that were virtually unbeatable.  No surprise how we voted.  Bias?  What bias?  We are almost as bad now as we were good back then… but I digress.
Were it a West Indies XIV (14), we would have voted the following people on (who are also products of those 70s – 80s teams:
(12)  Andy Roberts
(13)  Curtley Ambrose
(14)  Courtney Walsh
You notice that we picked 3 fast bowlers to make up 12, 13, and 14?  No surprise since the West Indies have boasted 6 of the best  12 fast bowlers of all time in our opinion but, once again, I digress.

The deal is, you are allowed  allowed to pick as follows:
